The 3 Best Bookstores in Arlington Heights…and Why!

We can agree that reading is a wonderful pastime! It’s also the perfect way to expand your horizons and introduce yourself to new ways of thinking.

Whether you’re looking for a novel to read on the train, research materials for a project, or a new cookbook for upping your game in the kitchen, bookstores will be your best friend!

Luckily for you, some of the best bookstores in Arlington Heights are not too far from our community! In fact, here’s a list of our local favorites.

Half Price Books

Just as the name suggests, Half Price Books is a bargain bookstore. Started in the 1970s by a couple of book lovers, Half Price Books is dedicated to providing the public with reading materials of all kinds.

In addition to being a ready source of books, movies, and music, they also love giving back to the community. Donating over a million books in 2018, they also participate in the Half Pint Library Book Drive and the Million Book Donation Project.

If you’re looking for a place to pick up a new book or two at a place that gives back to the community, look no further!

Kinokuniya Chicago

Kinokuniya Chicago is unique in that it focuses on Japanese culture. This lovely store started in Japan in 1927, and the first United States branch opened in 1969.

They offer a variety of books and other materials, believing that bookstores should be centers of art and culture in addition to providing reading material.

Kinokuniya have books in Japanese and English and host regular events; in the past, Kinokuniya Chicago has hosted a Gundam Contest and an author event with Senri Oe.

They also have monthly children’s story events in Japanese.

If you’re willing to travel into metropolitan Chicago, After-Words is a wonderful place to shop for new and used books. They are one of the few independent bookstores left in Chicago’s downtown area, and they offer over 70,000 titles.

Unable to find the book you’re looking for? Ask the staff about special-ordering it. Special orders can be placed from anywhere in the world five days a week, and the staff will do their best to find whatever literary white whale you might happen to have.

If you don’t feel like braving the downtown Chicago crowds, some of their used book inventory is listed online. After-Words is an excellent place to spend a few hours while supporting a small business!
