For over 90 years, Arlington International Racecourse has provided a venue for world-class thoroughbred horse racing. Located less than 10 minutes from Hancock Square at Arlington Station, Arlington Park also hosts other exciting events throughout the year. If you’ve never made it to the race track, summer is a great time to do so.
Events at Arlington International Racecourse
Undeniably, the races are the main attraction here. However, the racecourse has also hosted food truck festivals, renaissance fairs, concerts, movie nights, and White Sox fan days. Upcoming events include the 6th annual Food Truck Festival on July 13th, complete with live bands and 20 food trucks. Arlington Million contenders will also be participating in prep races throughout the day.
The Arlington Million is a race for thoroughbred horses ages 3 years and above. On August 10th, the Arlington Million will celebrate its 37th year of racing. Besides the races, spectators can also vie to be the best-dressed Arlington Million lady or gentleman. To see other events in July and beyond, check the online calendar.
Dining Options at Arlington Park
The Terrace Cafe is located next to the finish line and is a great place to watch the races while enjoying wings, burgers, hot dogs, and fruit salads. The dress code is casual, but you do need to reserve a table.
At Cowboy Grille, you get to choose from 20 beers on tap and popular foods such as beer-battered chicken fingers and BBQ platters. The latter comes with delicious sides like mac and cheese, honey butter cornbread, black pepper fries, and bourbon baked beans.
Mr. D’s Sports Bar is open year-round, not just during the racing season. Start with an appetizer like mini corn dogs or fried calamari. Next, choose a burger, prime rib sandwich, or pizza. This is a great vantage point for watching races and sporting events.
If you’d like a really special dining experience, splurge at the Million Room Restaurant, where you can enjoy succulent steaks, gourmet pasta, or pan-seared scallops. The restaurant also gives you an unbeatable view of the track. Many guests reserve tables for the whole day during important races.
What to Wear
If you’ve ever attended (or at least watched) the Kentucky Derby, you know that guests enjoy dressing up for horse races. At Arlington International Racecourse, what you wear depends on where you want to go. The Governor’s Room, the Skyline Lounge, and Million Room Restaurant are a few of the places that have enforced dress codes.
However, if you have box seats or want to eat at Terrace Cafe or the Miller Lite Deck, you can dress casually. Read more about dress codes here.
